Parents –it is that time again! Kids are back in school.  Since families face so many challenges such as academic pressures, financial strain, family issues, and continuous violence, parents need to make sure students have a smooth transition into the new school year so they can be successful. We will look at a few tips to help parents with this important transition.

First of all, it is important that parents get the students in a good routine. Students need to start off with breakfast at home or at school. Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. When students eat breakfast, they can focus better at school and have a positive start to their day. Next, students need to have a set time to go to bed so they can get up in a timely manner. If kids are sleepy, they cannot pay attention in class. Not only is breakfast and a certain bedtime important, but a homework routine is necessary.

Parents need to make sure that students complete their homework nightly. They can complete it in the afterschool program if they go there or when they get home. Homework is designed to reinforce what has been taught at school. Parents be prepared to help students. If parents do not have a clear understanding of homework assignments, they can contact the child’s teacher. There are a lot of online resources they can use also. Kids’ Choice Inc. is an excellent resource for kids to use. They can get ideas from other students on this website. Homework is important, but students must feel safe at school.
In the past few years, we have been challenged with violence in our schools. The school goes over the safety plans with parents and students, but it is imperative that parents sit down and make sure students understand the importance of safety drills and how they need to obey. Sometimes kids are nervous during these drills so parents need to reassure their child that the drills are designed for them to practice safety in case there is an emergency. Parents might have to have these talks with students throughout the year. Parents need to also know the medical procedures in case their child get sick at school. When children get sick, most schools allow students to complete assignments online. If parents have any questions about safety or health procedures, they can contact the teacher or school. Contact with the teacher and school will keep parents informed.

Lastly, parents need to stay in close contact with teacher and school about important changes and announcements. The school sends home important papers on a regular basis and they also post them on their website. Sometimes they do robo calls. Make sure you check your child’s bookbag daily, listen out for the phone calls from school, check out the website and attend parent teacher conferences also.
In conclusion, parents you are the important link to your child’s success in school. Establishing a good routine is important, understanding the health and safety procedures, and communicating with the teacher and school will help your child to start and finish the school year strong.
